Captain’s Statement

Dear Member,

I wish to take this opportunity to thank you for your overwhelming support over the past few months since I accepted to be your Captain! I have approached many members with sponsorship requests and I am deeply humbled by the positive response received so far.

The Easter weekend marks a very important chapter at the Royal Nairobi Golf Club, the prestigious Easter Invitational Golf Tournament dubbed the “Tannahill Shield” which is to be played between Friday 14th April and Sunday 16th April, 2017.  This is an amateur golf tournament that was inaugurated in February 1924 by the late Arthur C. Tannahill of the Royal Nairobi Golf Club (Captain-1924 and President-1928).

This year marks the 93rd edition of the tournament and as is the tradition, the host, Royal Nairobi Golf Club, has invited 8 other teams namely Karen, Limuru, Mombasa, Muthaiga, Sigona, Railway, Western Kenya and Vet Lab golf clubs to participate in the competition. Each team consists of 4 male pairs with each pair playing a “three way” foursome match play over 18 holes on Friday, 36 holes on Saturday and the final 18 holes on Sunday. A win earns a team 2 point, all square 1 point and of course a loss does not entitle you to any point. The team recording the most points over the three days is awarded the coveted “Tannahill Shield”.  The Royal team won the shield in 2014, 2015, 2016 and looks forward to making it another rare fete in the history of the tournament that Royal has won the shield for four continuous years. This achievement will definitely be the Captain’s delight!

Similar to last year, we shall also have the “Junior Easter Tournament” event commencing on Tuesday 11th April and ending on Wednesday 12th April.

In order to make this event successful, I wish to extend my utmost appreciations to the following 2017 Tannahill Shieldsponsors: Jamii Telecommunications Limited (JTL), Kenya Nuclear Electricity Board, Kengen, AAR, Apex Steel Limited, Coca-Cola and our always very supportive member, Sir Morris Njue.  Asanteni sana to all sponsors for your very kind generosity!

I wish to encourage all Royal members to turn out in large numbers to support the Royal team and ensure that the shield remains safe at the true “Home of Golf”!

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I take this opportunity to wish all the participating teams the very best in their quest for the Tannahill Shield and urge that we all embody the great sportsmanship spirit of camaraderie throughout the tournament period. I wish to assure you all that the Club’s management has made all the requisite preparations to ensure that you a have memorable moment at Royal.

Happy 2017 Tannahill Shield Tournament!

Yours sincerely,

Charles Omondi

These are major club tournaments namely, Men's Annual Foursomes (April), Club Stroke-play Championship (June) and Club Matchplay Championship (September). They are all very prestigious competitions and many of the past winners have gone on to join the professional ranks.

RNGC also hosts The Uhuru Shield which is played in December and attracts golfers from other clubs throughout the country.

Saturday Competition

These are large corporate sponsored golf days played on Saturdays by the members of our club and guests of the sponsor. Typically a field of 180 to 200 golfers

We also have specific competitions targeting the junior members where juniors from other clubs are invited. (Generally Sundays or any weekdays as determined)

Monthly mugs

These are twelve in number (12) played on Saturdays on a monthly basis mainly by members and sponsor's guests.

Club Nite

These are played by the members & sponsor's guests on Thursday afternoons of each week. On average there are 45 club nights played per year. RNGC Club Nights have become very popular with corporate sponsors as they are famously known to be very well attended and extremely vibrant - especially at the 19th hole!
